On your "black market" arguments against restrictions:
- there's plenty of illegal pornography on "regulated" porn sites already. Something like 80+%?
- there's no logic why black market porn would be any more illegal than black market porn already is (or do you think there are no illegal porn sites right now?)
- banning won't work perfectly but it's good enough. For example, illegal torrent sites can still be accessed wherever torrenting was banned, but losing the main access points (TPB, etc) led to a huge drop in file sharing (AI says down to 7% in 2013 of what it was at its peak).
Question: if it's illegal for two people to go at it in the public square (and illegal for you to watch, voyeurism is a crime in most places afaik), why is it legal to have that exact same scene with the exact same people, on a screen? What's next, snuff films? As long as it's consenting adults and not on the black market, of course... 🤡
You conflate illegal with disallowed. Illegal or prohibited carries the threat of punishment even when someone isn’t othering someone, for example, consuming alcohol in his own home during the prohibition era. Today, alcohol is legal, but private businesses make their own restrictions as they see fit: no alcohol in the office, no drinking on the job. The same with porn: porn is mostly legal, but your employer disallows it in his work environment: no government required at all.
Thanks for your thoughtful piece on pornography. I'm delighted to see theres a growing awareness of just how destructive it is. I am a "boomer" and "discovered" porn in the early days of the web. A combination of a flagging relationship, low self esteem and extrinsic financial pressures led to a life long addiction. But here's the thing. I justified its use to myself because it was free, noone got hurt (apparently) but most importantly it was a secret. This, IMO, is why it has proliferated like a cancer. None needs to know. Zero accountability. And there lies the rub. If the Government isn't going to do something about it who will? Is the prevailing mentality. Yes, somewhat belatedly l write this response. Yes, a personal choice must be made, and like all addictions its a constant battle. That said, IMO The State is incentivised to continue to "turn a blind eye" because it (porn) immasculates the male population which in turn transfers that lost power/energy into the hands of the ruling bureaucrats.
Its only when communites return as a self regulating entities, outside of State interference, and individuals once again become accountable participants, that these kind of scourges will be mitigated.
